Empire State Milk Quality Council
Albany, NY
607-255-8202
Victoria Pedersen Email

The ESMQC began as the Empire State Mastitis Council in the mid-1970s. It was modeled after the National Mastitis Council (NMC) and had as its goal to reduce the incidence of mastitis and improve the quality of the milk produced on New York dairies. Achieving this goal benefits everyone in the milk production chain:
· For producers, it increases cow productivity and health and farm profitability. It decreases the use of antibiotics and the risk of antibiotic residue.
· For handlers, quality milk increases finished product yield, quality and shelf life.
· For consumers, they can be assured of quality milk, thereby increasing confidence in and demand for dairy products.

In the 1990s the group changed its name, but its goals remained the same: to focus the attention of producers and handlers on the importance of udder health and milk quality. It does this through education programs, collaboration with the Quality Milk Production Services (QMPS) and, of course, the Super Milk program. Begun in 1990, the Super Milk program recognizes producers that achieve quality standards – keeping their somatic cell counts below 250,000 – and operate exemplary farmsteads.

Jackson-Mitchell - Meyenberg Goat Dairy
Turlock, CA
800-891-GOAT
Frank Fillman Email

In 1868 a Swiss born immigrant by the name of John B. Meyenberg came to the United States after inventing the process of evaporating unsweetened condensed milk for Nestles Company. The process of heating canned milk to 243 degrees, then cooling to 90 degrees allows the milk to maintain a shelf life of five plus years. The patent for the evaporated process became extremely valuable during the civil war and for those who did not have refrigeration. In 1885, the US patent office helped start the Pet Milk Company that evolved into the Carnation Milk Company. The son, John P. Meyenberg had a passion for goat’s milk and branched off to become MEYENBERG Goat Milk Products. In 1934, Harold Jackson bought the company because his infant son, Robert, suffered from cow milk allergies and digestive problems. The infant son grew up and today, Robert D. Jackson owns and operates the company along with his wife of 43 years, Carol Jackson. Together they have taken a small evaporated milk company to the nation's largest manufacturer of goat milk products.

Orin Thomas & Sons
Rutland, VT
802-773-6788
Richard Thomas Email

We are a small, family-owned dairy nestled in the beautiful, rolling hills of central Vermont. Our family has owned this land for over 150 years, starting from decidedly humble origins. When Grandfather Orin Thomas purchased our farm in 1854, it's unlikely that he knew he was beginning a family business that would continue to grow and prosper over the next three generations. Orin Thomas bought his first purebred Holstein in 1901 and upon his death in 1909, his son Orin took over management of the farm, which then had 40 Holsteins. In 1921, Orin started delivering milk in Rutland City and Thomas Dairy was born. Instead of relying on rbST for increased milk production, at Thomas Dairy we believe happy, peaceful cows from small, healthy herds produce the creamiest, tastiest milk. And, because ALL the milk from Thomas Dairy comes from Vermont farmers who have have pledged not to use rbST, we can guarantee it is hormone-free.

Rutter's Dairy, Inc.
York, PA
800-964-5735
Todd Rutter Email

Rutter’s traces its roots to 1747, when William Penn’s grandson deeded farmland in York County to the Rutter family. George and Bud Rutter – the “Rutter Brothers” – grew up on the family homestead. They sold their farm products – on their first day in 1921, eight quarts of milk from a horse-drawn wagon – to the public and were the sole employees in the early days.

In 1938, the government fined Rutter Brothers Dairy for having too much butterfat in its milk. What initially seemed like a setback turned into a very good thing for a fledgling dairy as the public learned that Rutter’s had been cited for having too much of a good thing. George and Bud set a standard for high quality and customer service that guides Rutter’s nine decades later. Rutter’s Dairy is the lone fluid dairy left in York County, spending more than $12.5 million  annually to purchase milk from area farms. Rutter’s Dairy serves Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.

Tillamook County Creamery Association
Tillamook, OR

Kevin Baca Email

Just over a hundred years ago, several small creameries teamed up to form the Tillamook County Creamery Association (TCCA) to ensure the quality and reputation of cheese made in the Tillamook Valley.

The creameries that created TCCA knew that together, working cooperatively toward that goal, they could make even better products. Maybe even make a better life for themselves. They were right. Today, we’re made up of nearly 110 dairy farm families who own TCCA (many of whom are kin to the early pioneers), and the Tillamook brand can be found in stores from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine.

As much as we’ve grown, we haven’t lost sight of our past. We still use the same cheddar cheese recipe, now over 100 years old. And we’re still true to the values that brought us together in the first place. We treat every day as an opportunity to follow our founders’ example, by working hard to make the highest quality, best-tasting dairy products. Dairy farming is what we love to do, and we’re proud of our products. We just know you’ll enjoy them as much as we do.

Turkey Hill Dairy, Inc.
Conestoga, PA

Peggy Good Email

More than 75 years ago, in the southern end of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Armor Frey started each day by watching the sunrise from the top of Turkey Hill. Then he'd toss a few bottles of milk into the back of his touring sedan and set off to sell them to his neighbors. It was the Great Depression, and every penny helped.

In 1947, Glenn, Emerson, and Charles Frey bought their father's business. Over the years, the little dairy thrived on their hard work. In 1980, the Frey brothers took the biggest step in the life of the dairy by expanding its ice cream production. Turkey Hill Ice Cream quickly became a favorite in local Lancaster County stores. In 1981, they persuaded a few independent stores in the Philadelphia area to give "Turkey Who?" a try. Philadelphians loved it. The ice cream was always good, but priced so everyone could enjoy it. Light ice cream soon followed. Then frozen yogurt. Little by little, this tiny dairy became a favorite in some of the country's biggest markets.

Twice a week we drive across Vermont to the 20 Family Farms to pick-up fresh goats’ milk to turn into exquisite cheeses. We believe that pure milk makes the best cheese. Vermont land, the pasture and soil, the seasons, the special care to the goats can all be tasted in our cheeses. Our cows’ milk and cream comes from a local Coop of 500 family dairy farmers in northern Vermont. The cream is separated in the morning and freshly delivered within a few hours to the creamery. High butterfat and outstanding quality cream is what makes our crème fraiche and cultured butter so good. All natural and rBST-free.
