Task Force VI, Small Ruminants:

Christopher Hylkema, Director

Task Force VI will be reviewing and finishing updates for the following guidelines:
Guideline 70 - Guideline for the Design, Installation, and Cleaning of Small Ruminant Milking Systems and Guideline 73 – Guidelines for the Layout of Dairy Milkrooms for Small Ruminant Operations – both are under review with input from the original contributors to be sure the information is still relevant. Dan Scruton is checking tables against new ISO standards.
Guideline 71 - Farmers Guide to Somatic Cell Counts in Sheep – has been reviewed, some editorial changes to be made, tables also under review to determine relevancy based on review of GL 70.
Guideline 78 - Guideline for Bio-security for Sheep and Goat Dairies. Work is progressing with this guideline and hopefully can be finalized at this meeting. Dr. Julie Smith provided review and the guideline is being completely re-evaluated for accuracy, content and presentation. Significant progress has been made to incorporate the latest in disease threat listings from USDA.
Guideline 75 - Direct Microscopic Examination of Milk from Small Ruminants – Dr. Bill Northeimer, FDA, has brought some issues with the staining process, Lynn Hinckley will work with him on this.
Guideline 76 - Out-Of-Season Breeding for Goats – group (TFVI) to review and send comments to Dan Scruton.
In addition to finishing the review on these guidelines the task force will open up discussions to determine any needs for new guidelines to address current issues regarding milk production in small ruminant species.
